Oscar Alegre and Eva Valgañón’s old vineyards are set beneath the Obarenes Mountains in the western reaches of the Rioja Alta. The husband and wife team produce very old-school Rioja (as in pre-Bordelais, 19th Century Rioja) in tiny quantities, focusing on lithe and brilliant wines that have joyful energy and the kind of transparency that only comes from a light hand. The vineyards are all worked organically and regeneratively, from terraced sites cut into the mountainsides.
