Natural Wine Company

Continuing our values at a distance feature (delicious, eminently curbside-able wines), here's a look at McFadden Farm.

Guinness McFadden has been growing organic wine in Mendocino's Potter Valley since 1970, thirteen years before the Potter Valley AVA was designated. Back then, for a young "back to the earth" guy, organic farming had a different name: farming.

Since that time, McFadden Farm has grown to include not just organic vineyards, but also organic herbs, garlic, rice, and organic, grass-fed beef. Despite expanding to cover nearly every component of the dinner table, the farm has also shrunk its carbon footprint by becoming a net exporter of electricity: through solar panels at the winery and converting an old dam to hydroelectric generation, McFadden Farm now produces surplus electricity that is returned to the local power grid.

Being environmentally conscious and proactive is one thing. Growing high quality wines at great prices is quite another. And that’s where Blue Quail comes in. These wines are proof that you don’t have to compromise: yes, you can run a truly green, sustainable, whole-agriculture operation; yes, you can make wines that people genuinely want to drink, regardless of the vineyard’s provenance and practices; and yes, you can do it all at an everyday, affordable price.

Blue Quail Sauvignon Blanc 2019
The Blue Quail Sauvignon Blanc has great aromas and flavors of orange blossom, jasmine, honeydew melon, spice and grapefruity citrus. Crisp acidity and a long, lingering finish. Fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel. Certified organic.

Blue Quail Pinot Gris 2019
The Blue Quail Pinot Gris is a full bodied, delicately fragrant wine with floral notes, hints of pear, apple, and vanilla with clove and ginger spice. This is not a gris that’s inspired by the current trend in el cheapo grigio. This is real, honest Pinot Gris. Fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel. Certified organic.

Blue Quail Chardonnay 2019
The Blue Quail Chardonnay is stainless steel fermented and held with zero malolactic fermentation. Fruit forward, beautiful bouquet of apple, pear and peach blossom lead seamlessly into delicious apple, white peach and pear flavors, balanced by nice crisp acidity. It is a terrific food wine, pairing well with seafood, shellfish, poultry and cheeses. Certified organic.

McFadden Farm "Fontaine" Rosé of Pinot Noir 2019
McFadden Farms' Fontaine Pinot Noir Rosé is a gorgeous value. Grown from the McFadden's organic estate vineyard in the Potter Valley, the grapes are whole-cluster pressed and fermented to full dryness in stainless steel. The wine's color is beautifully pale and peach-pink in hue, and on the palate and in the nose, the wine is a subtle creature, with early strawberries, fresh flowers, and tangy acids. Only 1,200 cases produced. Certified organic.
