Since 2011, scouring obscure and often forgotten vineyards from the Willamette to the Columbia Gorge to the Rogue Valley, John House and Ksenija Kostic have focused principally on four sites, teasing the terroir from low-yielding vines and letting the vineyards speak for themselves. Their single-vineyard wines evoke a sense of place and time, each with the lift and sinewy vigor that comes with some genuinely fearless acidity and each is very limited. The Big Salt represents a more experimental approach in the winery, co-fermenting different fruit and different cuvées, and the Old Love goes a step further, with methods that were inspired by early 19th Century Austrian monks, who used an array of unique elevage practices to bring out the full potential of their wines.
