Founded in the 1860s, ArPePe (named for the initials of the founder, Arturo Pelizzatti Perego) is set in the northern Italy’s Alps, just south of the Swiss border. Carved into the vertiginous alpine slopes, the terraces climb far above the winery on valley floor. The terraces wrap around the mountainsides, canvassing the Grumello and Sassella districts of Valtellina. All work in the vineyards here is necessarily by hand and managed organically, both for philosophical and practical reasons. Each parcel of the estate’s vineyards represents its own terroir, elevation, and exposure, and ArPePe’s multitude of cuvées represents a different facet of the estate overall.
