Starting back in 1989, Álvaro Palacios was one of the first winemakers to bring Priorat to the international wine world’s attention. A decade later he would do the same for Bierzo and its then-unknown Mencía vine. With his nephew Ricardo Perez, Palacios has created something special with Descendientes de J. Palacios, a domaine named for his father, Ricardo’s grandfather. Spread throughout the region, the vineyards that Ricardo tends are a patchwork of tiny plots clinging to vertiginous terraces and hillsides. The vines are truly ancient in many cases and generally planted in potpourri field blends of red and white indigenous varieties.
