Don and Suzie Law’s wine journey began with a passion for the wines of the Rhône and Priorat. Fifteen years later, Law Estate has established itself as a world-class artisan of Grenache- and Syrah-based wines from Paso Robles, “America’s Rhône”. Though the Rhône and Priorat were the inspiration for Law Estate, there is no attempt to clone or mimic those wines. The focus at Law Estate is expressing the unique microclimate and terroir of the vineyard. The microclimate is a result of the vineyard’s proximity to the Pacific and its high altitude, with parcels ranging from 1,600 to 1,900 feet above sea level. In terms of soil, Paso Robles is unique in California for having a high proportion of limestone terroir, where most appellations are dominated by granites, shales, and volcanic soils. At Law Estate, the vines are set entirely on limestone. In addition to finding the perfect place in California to grow wine, the Laws have also made the necessary investments to ensure that the wines are grown responsibly. The vineyard is managed sustainably and organically, with minimal inputs. The winery is all gravity-flow, with a small solar farm that produces nearly all of the winery’s electricity. A bioreactor recycles all of the winery’s water. Law Estate’s winemaker is Philipp Pfunder, who has worked at New Zealand’s Kumeu River, Château Angélus in Bordeaux, and Screaming Eagle. Natural Wine Company is thrilled to present Law Estate Wines, which Josh Raynolds described in Vinous as “one of the most exciting and ambitious wineries to emerge in Paso Robles in recent years.”
