Established in 1851 and revitalized in the mid-1990s, Larkmead is one of Napa’s original great estates. The estate never took part in the excesses of the ‘cult of bigness’ during the 1990s and 2000s and it still sets the standard for the traditional winemaking that Napa got away from during that time. Planted to vines on a 300 foot deep gravel bed, the estate Cabernet is “a quintessential bridge between the new and old Napa,” according to Jon Bonné. Per Robert Parker, “proprietor Cam Baker and his winemaker Dan Petroski continue to prove irrefutably what a first growth terroir Larkmead possesses. Located directly on the valley floor north of St. Helena, this is a superb site, with alluvial, gravelly soils, but there’s diversity in the soil, with plenty of clay, rock and what they refer to as Cortina Gravel.”
