Nervi’s great crus of Molsino and Valferana have been cultivated and lauded since medieval times, with records of the terroirs dating to the Thirteenth Century. Though the Nervi cantina itself was founded in 1906, the vineyards had been the family since the 1600s. Roberto Conterno began consulting for the most recent owners, working closely in the vineyard management and production of the wines. That work gave him an intimate understanding of Gattinara’s unique volcanic terroir, especially for the Molsino cru. The connection to the vineyards eventually led to a decision, and Conterno purchased Nervi in 2018, marking his first new vineyard acquisition outside of Barolo.
