Te Mata, Hawkes Bay

Te Mata Estate has five vineyards totaling 15 hectares on the free draining soils of the Havelock Hills north-facing slopes. Te Mata Estate’s wines are from some of the oldest vineyards in New Zealand. In 1996 the Havelock Hills area was recognized for the significance of its natural and viticultural heritage when it was designated the Te Mata Special Character Zone. First planted in the 1890s, this area produces wines with balance, power and elegance.

Tablelands, Martinborough

The idea for Tablelands as a wine company began in January, 2009 in New York City during a conversation between two wine-loving mates; Magnus Riddiford and Simon Buck. However, the inspiration for the wines they set out to make was born much earlier. Magnus’s family has lived for generations in Wairarapa where they developed a strong kinship with the land. It was here, among the flattened hilltops and gently rolling gullies of Martinborough, that the Riddiford ancestral home “Tablelands” was built. The countless meals and bottles of wine shared within the walls of Tablelands imbues that place with a sense of home that both Magnus and Simon.

Rippon, Central Otago

Rippon Vineyard was the dream of Rolfe and Lois Mills, pioneers of wine in Central Otago.  Experimental vines were planted in 1974, but the bulk of the vineyard was planted in 1982 with Pinot Noir representing  40% of the vineyard.  The first commercial vintage was produced in 1988. Winemaker Nick Mills, son of Rolfe and Lois returned to the property in 2002 after four years of work, study and life in Burgundy.  He learned his “wine growing” skills at Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron, Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, Domaine Albert Mann – as well as many others.  Nick and his wife Jo, also a well respected winemaker in her own right, work with other members of the Mills family to make Rippon Vineyard & Winery a unique and successful family operation. The family’s principle goal is to create vins de terroir; wines that are an accurate reflection of their surroundings.  It is the micro-life in their soils which – in their ability to metabolize minerals into a form that vines can assimilate – are the link in between plants and the earth.  This simple biology is the essential framework in producing a wine which is true to its soil and site.  With this understanding comes an absolute respect for the land and life therein and it is for this reason that Rippon is run biodynamically.

Quartz Reef, Central Otago

Planted on New Zealand’s largest quartz deposit, Quartz Reef specializes in the creation of exceptional Sparkling Wine and Pinot Noir. Once the focus of a gold strike in the 1860’s this site is now a thriving vineyard. The north-facing vineyard is situated to absorb the heat of the sun and the heat retaining properties of the quartz soils store and reflect this heat increasing the ripening of grapes in the cool Central Otago climate. Utilizing biodynamic wine growing practices, winemaker Rudi Bauer has a mission to make wines that capture the essence of Central Otago. Rudi earned degrees in viticulture and winemaking in his native Austria before moving to New Zealand in 1985 as assistant wine maker at Mission Estate in Hawkes Bay. Since then, Rudi has been honing his craft in many of New Zealand’s regions as well as Oregon and Burgundy. As one of Rippon Vineyard’s pioneer winemaker’s, Rudi won Central Otago’s first gold medal for Pinot Noir in 1991. And now, as owner/winemaker of Quartz Reef, Rudi is making the best wines of his career.

Ana, Marlborough

Ana is part of the Eradus Estate family of wines grown entirely in the Awatere Valley, a sub region of Marlborough with its own unique microclimate. The Awatere Valley is windier, dryer, stonier and cooler compared to Marlborough’s other growing regions and these conditions contribute to the wines having a lovely mineral backbone with crisp clean acidity. Eradus Wine was started in 2002 by the Eradus family as an investment in Marlborough’s growing wine industry. When Michiel and his wife, Hanna decided to move back to New Zealand from Amsterdam they took over the wine business while raising their family. Michiel Eradus is the vineyard owner and part of the wine making team. Together their goal is to produce a “Classic Marlborough” Sauvignon Blanc with lifted fruit characters on the nose. This combined with an intensely fruity and herbaceous palate makes for a very fine wine.
